Frequently Asked Questions about Drainfields and Septic Tanks

View the index page

Do I need to pump my tank, and how often?

Yes, just like your automobile needs the oil changed and tuned-up, your septic tank needs to be cleaned out periodically to remove buildup of sludge on bottom and solids on top. Also, if you can have and use a garbage grinder under the kitchen sink you should pump your septic tank more often.

Is there anything I can or should add to my septic system?

No, additives will never replace the natural process and decomposition of human waste. They often create a foreign type of bacteria that if pushed out into the drainfield can cause premature failure of the system.

Can or should I drive over my septic tank or drainfields?

Driving cars, trucks and other heavy vehicles should never travel over a septic or drainfield system. Driving household lawnmowers over septic and drainfield systems are on the other hand, ok.

What access does my septic tank have for cleaning out?

Normally a 16x16 or 24x24 manhole plug will be over the inlet and outlet ends of the tank and usually very accessible, however for homes over 30 years old there may be a strip lid style cover on the septic tank which requires specific location.

Is there anything that I can do to help maintain my drainfield?

Yes, your system will work better and more efficiently if you:
a. Spread out clothes washing to several times a week instead of all at one time.
b. Keep grease and fats out of drain lines and septic tank.
c. Dispose table scrapes before washing dishes, pots and pans.
d. Keep trees and their root systems away from the septic and drainfield system.
e. Never build any structures over your septic tank or drainfield.

Are permits required to repair a septic tank or drainfield?

Yes, all septic system repairs and drainfield replacements require a permit from the Department of Health and must be conducted by a licensed septic tank contractor. However, pumping your septic tank does not require a permit.

What are some warning signs to impending septic or drainfield problems?

Some warning signs for impending septic and drainfield problems are:
a. Yellow grass over the drainfield area, where normally plush and green.
b. Slow draining in sinks and toilets.
c. Gurgling sounds in sink or tub.
d. Smelly water standing over your septic tank or drainfield area.

Should I put a sprinkler system over my septic or drainfield area?

It's ok but the drainfield doesn't need much extra water on it. Also, remember if replacement or repair of a drainfield is required sprinkler lines are one more obstacle.

Can cleaners and chemicals hurt my septic and drainfield system?

Yes, some chemicals and additives are toxic to your system and possibly to soil. Even worse is if these toxins get into the water table or water supply, someone may get very sick.
