Books, Videos, Learning Opportunities
 Good Bird, Inc. - Barbara Heidenreich has been working with birds for many years. She currently has two delightful parrot books available; both deal with solving behavior problems using positive reinforcement. Also has a quarterly magazine available and DVDs about training your parrot. She travels the world offering education and training seminars to veterinarians, companion parrot owners and zoos.
 Living and Learning with Parrots - Class taught by Dr. Susan G. Friedman, Ph.D. Susan is a highly trained and experienced behaviorist, and has been working with birds for many years. This online class is essential for any bird owner, and may change how you look at and interact with your birds (for the better!). We can't recommend this class highly enough. The class is often full for several months out, so scouring the web to find when and where Dr. Friedman might be giving her seminar in person is a good idea.

 Natural Encounters, Inc. - Steve Martin has been working with birds of all species for well over 20 years. The website contains tons of information, as well as some really great articles on a wide variety of bird related subjects (notably, training).
Toys and Enrichment
 The Avian Medical Center offers many types of toys and enrichment products here at the clinic for fantastic prices, often locally produced. We pride ourselves in carrying 'toys with a higher purpose' that are designed to engage your bird, stimulating them physically and mentally. Further, we make sure the toys we offer are ones that your bird will actually want to play with. The best sort of toys are ones that your bird can destroy, right? If they just hang in the cage, while Polly avoids them, then the toys aren't serving their purpose! We encourage you to pick up a new toy or treat for your bird the next time you visit us! Toys and activity are essential for the continued good health of your bird. We have included some links here so that you may order toys online from a good source.

 Starbirds Enrichment Toys - great range of enrichment toys designed by Bonnie Jay (whose photography you may have seen in Bird Talk Magazine). They carry a great cargo net that lasts, even with cockatoos. It's a favorite for bird rooms across the country. They also carry the Brainiac Block and the Seek-a-Treat toy, in various sizes to suit any species of parrot.
Health and Nutrition
 Holistic Bird Newsletter - no longer published, but has access to previous articles that are very informative and helpful!
Parrot Talk - a website with articles from different sources. Helpful information (in most cases) to get started with, but feel free to contact us if you have any questions
Feeding Feathers Chat Group - If you have nutrition questions, this is a fantastic group to visit and contribute to. They have recipes that you want for your birds, trust me!

 Clicker Training - Karen Pryor's website. Check out the great educational articles, as well as excellent training tools available.

Why Adopt?
Like  kittens and puppies, many people prefer to start with young, cuddly birds that they can raise. It's understandable, baby birds are darn near irresistible!
However, adopting a bird can be a very rewarding experience, and not all birds available for adoption have lost their home due to behavior problems. Sometimes their family just ends up in a bad situation that forces them to choose between keeping the bird, and ensuring that the bird is well cared for and offered adequate attention.
As a courtesy, we are happy to place a posting at the clinic for those who may be seeking a new home for their birds. You can mail or fax one to us, no larger than 4" by 6", and we will post for 30 days, unless we hear otherwise from you. While posting will assist you in 'getting the word out', we cannot make any guarantees that you will be contacted by a suitable home. Many people receive a noteworthy response by posting to sites on the Internet. Screen interested adopters carefully.
If you are unable to place your birds on your own for any reason, then you may wish to contact one of the following organizations:
The Oregon Humane Society - This link will take you to OHS's "find a home" page. It provides links to rescue groups, and information about how to work with OHS to find a home for your bird.
The Gabriel Foundation - Based in the Denver area of Colorado. The site itself contains tons of great information on everything bird. This link will take you to the placement page.
 Exotic Bird Rescue of Oregon - Based in Eugene, Oregon. Site contains many links and resource options.
Rose City Exotic Bird Club - A local club that uses foster parents to care for birds until a great home is found. Also offer regular activities and a bird fair for avian enthusiasts in the Portland/Vancouver area
The Avian Publications website is a great place to find resources on everything bird! From behavior to first aid, this site has a book, dvd or video on it.
