How to Pick a Contractor
-
Contractors get more complaints with the Better Business Bureau then almost any other business sector. Checking out your prospective contractor is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself. No matter how comfortable you feel with someone you MUST do your homework! Below you will find information that will help get you started!
- Call the Washington State Department of Labor and Industry to confirm the company is properly bonded and in good standing with the state. You can also find out how long the company has REALLY been in business. 1-800-647-0987
- Check their references! You would be surprised how many people don't check company references. You may be even more surprised that it is not uncommon to get negative responses from them. Be sure to ask specific questions about how the project was performed.
- Call the US Bankruptcy Court and check if the company or company owner has filed for Bankruptcy. By looking into the companies past, you can see what you might expect in the future. (206) 553-7345
- Call the contractors insurance carrier to confirm that they have a policy that is in force and are insured for the type of work they intend to perform on your project. Contractor Liability insurance is expensive, but necessary!
- Lots of detailed information! The more information you have, the better equipped you are to make the right decision. If a company provides you vague information or is not thorough in their inspection BEWARE. You know what they say, "garbage in, garbage out." Why would a professional company providing quality workmanship want to limit the amount of information they give.
