Maximum Passenger Capacities for "Limousines" in New Jersey

Original Passenger Capacity

  • Sedan-Based Limousine - Driver + 5-Passengers
  • SUV - Based Limousine - Driver + 8-Passengers
  • 15-Passenger Van (maximum) - Driver + 14-Passengers

Limousine Passenger Capacity

  • Sedan Limousine - Driver + 9 Passengers
  • SUV Limousine - Driver + 12 Passengers
  • 15-Passenger Minibus/Limo Coach (maximum) - Driver + 14-Passengers

The penalty for operating a vehicle in excess of the maximum passenger capacity is:

  • First Offense: $2500
  • Second Offense: $5000

These vehicles must display Limousine's license plates. If the passenger capacity of one of these vehicles exceeds the numbers noted above it cannot be classified as a limousine in New Jersey. Drivers of limousines, which have a seating capacity of more than 6 (including the driver), must possess CDL or Commercial Driver's License.
