PHYSICIANS
Chul Jo Yang, M.D.
Founder of Central New York Physiatry in 1979, Dr. Yang is currently serving as Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Rehabilitation Medical Director of Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare of Utica, NY. Also, he is serving as Rehabilitation Medical Director for Rome Memorial Hospital, Allen Calder Health Related Facility and Heritage Health Care Center.
For the past 30 years, Dr. Yang, board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, has taken leadership in physical medicine and rehabilitation services in the Central New York area, while keeping close affiliations and relationships with health care facilities in the area. Dr. Yang has contributed vision and direction in establishing the current Faxton-St. Luke's Regional Rehabilitation Center, which includes a broad range of rehabilitation programs and services including Neuro Rehabilitation, Orthopedic Rehabilitation, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Communication Rehabilitation, Wellness Program and comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation. He has introduced a teaching institute level of electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies in the medical community of Central New York, while ensuring that testing methodology and equipment are kept up to date for our patients in the community.
Prior to his move to the Central New York area, Dr. Yang had been involved with in and
outpatient rehabilitation care as Assistant Director of the Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation Department of St. Barnabas Hospital of Bronx, NY, and Assistant Chief
of physiatry services in Lennox Hill Hospital of New York City. He also reorganized
and updated EMG and nerve conduction studies in both institutes while serving as Instructor
in Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University Medical Center and Adjunct Assistant
Professor of the Department of Physical Therapy at New York University. During
his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Rusk Institute of New
York University Medical Center, Dr. Yang was fortunate to be directly trained by
Dr. Joseph Goodgold, who is a well-recognized figure in EMG and nerve
conduction studies. He also had the opportunity to have direct contact with Dr. Howard Rusk,
founder of the Rusk Institute and who is considered to be the pioneer of rehabilitation
medicine. Dr. Rusk has been a strong influence on Dr. Yang's vision, direction and
philosophy in his many years of involvement in the rehabilitation medicine arena.
Dr. Yang's interest is to continue to devote his efforts to procure the advancement and
diversity of the entire spectrum of physical medicine and rehabilitation services as well as
EMG and nerve conduction studies in the Central New York area, collaborating with local
health care facilities and the medical community for development of unified, patient-focused
rehabilitation and wellness programs and services.
Anne Mathews, M.D.
Anne Mathews, M.D., is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pain Management. After finishing medical school, she completed one year of internship at Long Island College Hospital, Brooklyn, New York. Following internship, Dr. Mathews then went on to complete residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation SUNY University Hospital of Brooklyn Downstate Medical Center.
Dr. Mathews then worked at DuBois Regional Medical Center as attending physician and Assistant Medical Director of the Rehabilitation Unit for four years. She joined CNY Physiatry in August, 2001.
Dr. Mathews is actively involved as attending physician at Faxton Hospital Rehabilitation Unit and Rome Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Unit. She also has interests in electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies, pain management and pain management interventional procedures, musculoskeletal care and general rehabilitation.
