Safe Driving Course Requirement

Before you can make a road test appointment, you must first complete an approved pre-licensing safe driving course.  All drivers must complete this requirement by taking a special five-hour course available at our driving school. After you take the course, you will receive a certificate to present when you make your road test appointment. The certificate is valid for one year.

Note: A defensive driving course taught through the DMV-certified Point/Insurance Reduction Program does NOT qualify as the required 5-hour classroom pre-licensing course.

The Road Test

1.  You can make your road test appointment on-line at www.nysdmv.com (click on On-Line Services, then Schedule a Road Test) or by phone at (518-402-2100) (or 1-800-368-1168 for the hearing impaired).  Our driving school also provides services to make the appointment and take students to the Road Test.  When making your appointment, you must have your client ID number (9-digit number directly over your photo on your permit) and the certificate number that is printed on the Pre-licensing Course Completion Certificate (MV-278).

  1. When you arrive for your road test, you must bring the Pre-licensing Course Completion Certificate (MV-278) and your learner permit. If you have a junior learner permit issued on or after 9/1/03, you must also bring a completed Certification of 20 Hours of Supervised Driving (MV-262) http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/forms/mv262.pdf   signed by a parent or guardian.  This does not apply to applicants 17 years old who have completed a Certified Driver Education Course and present a valid Student Certificate of Completion (MV-285) at the road test.  If you do not have the required items, you will NOT be given a road test.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Road Test Scheduling System

Can I schedule my road test before I take the 5-hour pre-licensing course?

No. You must enter your pre-licensing course completion certificate number when scheduling your appointment. You also must present the certificate to the examiner at the road test post.

My certificate is expiring before I can get a road test appointment. What can I do?

You can still schedule your appointment as long as you do it before the certificate expires. The license examiner will let you take your road test as long as the documentation shows that you scheduled your test before your certificate expired. However, you will not be allowed to schedule another test if you fail. You will need to obtain another 5-hour pre-licensing course completion certificate before you schedule another test.

If my certificate expires, can I renew it?

No. You must take another 5-hour pre-licensing course in order to obtain another certificate.

What can I do if I lose my 5-hour course completion certificate?

You should contact the organization where you took the course, and obtain a duplicate from them.

I have a foreign license. Must I take the 5-hour pre-licensing course?

Yes, you must take a 5-hour pre-licensing course.
