Pests to watch for...

There are a few precautions you can, and should, take to avoid pests entering your home. However, once they are spotted inside the dwelling, treatment is best left to the professionally trained experts at Humphreys Pest Control.

Pests
Spring and Summer

Carpenter Ant
To prevent infestation (1) store firewood away from your home and remove dead wood and scraps from around the foundation (2) Make sure all plumbing and roof leaks are sealed and check crawl spaces for excess moisture (3) Direct rain gutters away from your home so water does not accumulate close to the foundation.

Pavement Ant
To prevent infestation (1) Seal cracks and holes in the home's exterior to prevent ants from entering (2) Cut vegetation away from the foundation (3) Avoid using landscape timbers and stones next to the home's foundation (4) Keep layers landscape mulch less than 2 inches thick and at least a foot from the home's foundation.

Oriental Cockroach
To avoid infestation (1) Eliminate potential harborages outside the home (2) Seal cracks in the building's exterior (3) Install screening in all vents.

Carpet Beetle
To avoid infestation (1) Don't store boxes of clothing in the attic, garage or basement (2) Clean storage boxes thoroughly before each season and seal all corners and openings (3) Clean woolens and natural fiber clothing prior to storage (4) Natural fiber clothing, stored in closets, should be covered with plastic covers (5) Consider large zippered plastic units for storage (6) Use mothballs to deter fabric pests.

Cluster Fly
To avoid infestation (1) Seal up outside cracks and holes in the home, especially on the south and west walls (2) cover all foundation and attic vents with tight-fitting screens (3) Periodically check soffit vents, gable vents and/or turbine vents (4) Have Humphreys treat the outside west and south walls of the home in mid to late August each year.

House Mouse
To avoid invasions (1) provide as little harborage as possible that might attract rodents and (2) seal as many exterior holes and cracks as possible.

House Spider
Regular removal of spider webs is the best way to limit these spiders. To prevent their entry (1) Seal up cracks around windows and doors (2) Use "bug" lights in exterior fixtures (3) Request professional exterior treatments from Humphreys Pest Control.

Wolf Spider
Control wolf spiders by placing sticking traps for capture. To prevent their invasion (1) Avoid heavy ground cover vegetation near the foundation (2) Seal exterior cracks and holes (3) Install tight-fitting screens on all attic and foundation vents (3) Seal holes around pipes indoors.

Yellow Sac Spider
Destroy and remove sacs, when found, and the spiders hiding in them. To prevent infestation (1) Eliminate heavy ground cover vegetation near the building (2) Seal exterior cracks and holes (3) Install tight-fitting screens on all vents (4) Seal holes around interior pipes.

Cat Flea
Regular grooming will limit your cat's fleas, but regular professional treatment of the home's interior is the most effective way to combat cat fleas, once they are in the home.
