Decorative Painting Tips - By Karen Thompson Steele
Decorative painting, murals and themed wallpaper for nurseries are becoming more popular then ever. A themed room is a great way to make a nursery uniquely for your baby. Finding a painter, the right paint, the right theme and all the other decisions that have to be made can be overwhelming along with everything else there is to do to prepare for baby. Following are some tips for finding what you need and getting the most of out your nursery decor.
When finding a contract painter, decorative painter or wallpaper hanger, look to friends and local businesses for contacts. Knowing that your friend was happy with their contractor will help put your mind at ease from the start. Try mid-range paint colors instead of pastels. These colors are still bright and fun and often last well into the toddler years before the child tires of them. Use satin or eggshell finish paint for clean ability without the sheen of semi-gloss. Satins and eggshells are also easier to paint over than flat paints. When adding a mural or paper border only decorate one or two walls. When the child outgrows the theme only those walls will have to be repainted. Just remember to keep a record of the paint color used! Choose your bedding or inspiration piece before choosing colors or themes. It is much easier to design the room around the bedding than to find bedding to match the room decor. Plan furniture arrangement before designing murals or other artwork. Nurseries typically have a lot of furniture so think about designing a mural that takes advantage of the top half of the walls or a paper border at ceiling height instead of chair-rail height. Choose a gender-neutral theme and color scheme for the nursery and it can be used for your next baby as well, with minimal updating.
Remember, have fun decorating your nursery and make it a special place for you and baby. You'll both be spending a lot of time there. - Karen Thompson Steele
