Drive many blocks past Federal Hill on Atwells Avenue and you'll reach what many consider to be the best Mexican restaurant in Rhode Island -- Mexico. Judging by what we ate, they could be right. We started with quesadillas, made from handmade tortillas and stuffed with potatoes, folded over and topped with shredded iceberg lettuce and lots of tart queso anejo. They're served with enormous portions of perfectly salty pinto beans and light, fluffy, seasoned rice.
The tamales were firm, reddish-brown pillows of corn flavor, stuffed with shredded pork (chicken is available also). There was shredded beef with onions, skillet-fried and covered in a salsa verde (typically made with tomatillos, an herb-flavored cousin of the tomato, and jalepenos or other green chiles and cilantro). The multitude of flavors in this dish -- from the peppery beef strips to the hot spicy salsa -- is proof of the uncomplicated way Mexican cooking combines complex flavors.
I loved the chicken enchiladas (there's pork also). Soft corn tortillas envelop shredded chicken, all of which is smothered in queso blanco (a mild white cheese) and sprinkled with a pungent queso anejo. The walls are salmon-pink and adorned with mementos from Mexico, as well as bright Indian drawings. Half-way through our meal, the jukebox started up with the romantic strains of Spanish guitars. Ah, heaven . . .
Everything on the menu is less than $10; many are under $5.
