REZULIN®, A RU$H TO PROFIT$
This drug was designed for use by patients with Type 2 Diabetes. Rezulin was developed and placed on the market by Warner-Lambert, Park-Davis Corporation in January 1997. However, it was removed from the market in March 2000 because of the risk of liver toxicity associated with its prescribed use.
Rezulin went through the FDA drug approval process in less than half the usual time. During the three (3) years that the drug was available to diabetics, the warning label was changed four (4) times. Each warning was progressively stronger in its wording concerning potential side effects.
At the time Rezulin was removed from the market, it was estimated that more than one-half million diabetics were taking the drug. There were at least ninety (90) confirmed liver failures, including sixty-three (63) deaths. Rezulin had generated more than $1.8 billion in sales.
